Data Asset Management

F2A Conducting a Structured Data Inventory

February 17th, 2012

8:00 am - 11:15 am

Prerequisite: None

The problem in most companies today is not too little data but too much. Spreadmarts, desktop analytics, the propensity to shoehorn in new systems to solve old problems—these all contribute to the myriad of undocumented and little understood data, much of which is fiercely defended by business users as critical to operations. For the IT groups faced with actually measuring usage, value, or even quality of this data, wading in can be a daunting task. This workshop presents a structured way of conducting a data inventory for key data, ensuring that data is prioritized based on business drivers, and that the inventory effort itself is comprised of key milestones to ensure success and engage business stakeholders.

You Will Learn

  • The role of a data inventory in data governance programs, BI project prioritizations, and data quality improvement efforts
  • How to ensure that your data inventory process produces usable, valuable results rather than shelfware
  • Where to start, how to overcome key challenges, how to ensure an engaged and enthusiastic business customer

Geared To

  • Business and IT professionals who are tasked with implementing a data governance or data quality program; BI and MDM practitioners who must prioritize projects
