T7P: Social Media, Web 2.0, and BI: Extending the BI Portfolio

February 23rd, 2010

2:15 pm - 5:30 pm

Prerequisite: This course assumes a familiarity with BI concepts.

Social networking and social media sites are the highest-traffic sites on the Internet today. Many are beginning to open up access to their data or are allowing users to share that data with trusted third-party sites. The social and other data that can be collected from online sources will be a growing part of any company’s business intelligence portfolio.

This course looks at Web 2.0 and social media as it relates to business intelligence. We’ll examine Web technologies and social software features and put them into several contexts—as bits of technology, as external applications, as potential sources of data, and as a subject for analysis.

You Will Learn

  • About Web 2.0 and social software technologies
    • A primer on the basic concepts, technical elements, and social media sites
  • About social features, Web 2.0, and what they mean for our BI tools and environments
    • What BI vendors are doing
    • What people are doing with the vendors
  • How social media is influencing companies
    • Trends in the consumer markets
    • What consumer trends mean for marketing, selling, and measuring the business
