The theme for the 2013 TDWI World Conference in Chicago is Big Data Tipping Point. The Internet, social media, and streaming data are fundamentally changing DW/BI as we know it. The race is on to create the next competitive advantage. Businesses today must look beyond the status quo in BI and data analysis to discover fresh insights into how they can make smarter decisions, profit from customer intelligence, and optimize productivity. The answers are in the data—the big data. Dramatic improvements in the price and performance of computer hardware and storage have made it possible to analyze massive data volumes. Now, the quest for insight goes beyond limited summaries and aggregations to tap all data sources, structured and unstructured. New methods of working with big data, such as Hadoop and MapReduce, offer alternatives to traditional data warehousing—if you know how and when to use them.
